Baby’s Tub Is Still Toxic

Two years after public outrage about cancer-causing chemicals in baby shampoo, America’s leading baby shampoo is caught in a double standard.

No More Toxic Tub Getting Contaminants Out of Children's Bath & Personal Care Products by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics March 12th, 2009

Despite marketing claims like “gentle” and “pure,” dozens of top-selling children’s bath products are contaminated with the cancer-causing chemicals formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane, according to the March 2009 Campaign for Safe Cosmetics report, "No More Toxic Tub." This study is the first to document the widespread presence of both formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane  in bath products for children, including baby shampoos, bubble baths and baby lotions. Many products tested contained both chemicals. What We Found The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics commissioned an independent laboratory to test 48 products for 1,4-dioxane; 28 of those products were also tested for formaldehyde. The lab found that: 17 out of 28 products tested – 61 percent – contained both formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane. 23 out of 28 products – 82 percent – contained formaldehyde at levels ranging from 54 to 610 parts per million (ppm). 32 out of 48 products – 67 percent – contained 1,4-dioxane at levels ranging from 0.27 to 35 ppm. Health Concerns While a single product might not be cause for concern, the reality is that babies may be exposed to several products at bath time, several times a week, in addition to other chemical exposures in the home and environment. Those small exposures add up and may contribute to later-life disease. Formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane are known carcinogens; formaldehyde can also trigger skin rashes in some children. Unlike many other countries, the U.S. government does not limit formaldehyde, 1,4-dioxane, or most other hazardous substances in personal care products. Where They Come From The chemicals were not disclosed on product labels because they're contaminants, not ingredients, and therefore are exempt from labeling laws. Formaldehyde contaminates personal care products when common preservatives release formaldehyde over time in the container. Common ingredients likely to contaminate products with formaldehyde include quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea and diazolidinyl urea. 1,4-dioxane is a byproduct of a chemical processing technique called ethoxylation, in which cosmetic ingredients are processed with ethylene oxide. Manufacturers can easily remove the toxic byproduct, but are not required by law to do so. Common ingredients likely to be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane include PEG-100 stearate, sodium laureth sulfate, polyethylene and ceteareth-20. What You Can Do Contrary to industry statements, there are no regulatory standards that limit formaldehyde, 1,4-dioxane or most other toxic chemicals in personal care products sold in the United States. There are signs the U.S. is gearing to catch up, but for now it's up to consumers to consider carefully before they buy. Here's some suggestions for safeguarding your family's health: Simplify: Select products with fewer ingredients and no synthetic fragrance or dyes, and use fewer products overall. Choose safety: Search EWG's cosmetic safety database, Skin Deep, to learn more about the products you use and find safer alternatives. Read labels: Select products for baby and yourself that don't contain the ingredients listed above, which are commonly contaminated with formaldehyde or 1,4-dioxane. Take action! Can’t memorize these lists? Nobody can. If harmful contaminants and ingredients weren’t allowed in products, you wouldn’t have to. Tell Congress you want safe cosmetics for babies, adults and everyone in between. Spread the word: Send an e-card letting friends and family know about this report. Status Update Led by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, 44 organizations representing 1.7 million moms, nurses, doctors and other people concerned about our environment and our health signed on to a May letter to J&J, in which we asked the company to make safe products and meet with us. Read the letter and list of signers. On April 29, 2009, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) introduced the Safe Baby Products Act, which directs the Food and Drug Administration to investigate and regulate hazardous contaminants in personal care products marketed to or used by children. She introduced the bill in response to the "Toxic Tub" report. Though the U.S. FDA has yet to respond to our test results, retailers and governments in Asia have taken action. Immediately following our report release, a major supermarket in China pulled Johnson & Johnson products from the shelves amid concerns that the products are contaminated with carcinogens. Both the Vietnamese Drug Administration and the Chinese government responded by testing products immediately. Though China later declared J&J products safe, it tested products made in China, not those for the U.S. market. Manufacturers can use different ingredients for different markets, which may be the case here. Because we don't have the full report from China, we have no way of knowing which products the Chinese government tested or what they found. Here in the United States, our tests found two carcinogenic contaminants in Johnson's Baby Shampoo. In November 2011, we released a new report, Baby's Tub Is Still Toxic, showing that while safer products are being sold in some countries, J&J has yet to reformulate globally. Are the cleaners you are using in your home making Your family or someone else's family sick?

WOW!  Did you ever stop to think that the very products you are using in your home to rid it of germs may be making your family OR someone else's family sick?

That question never occured to me until I became chemically sensitive.  I had to be very selective where I went.  Even to the extent of my family & friends homes.  Some people just don't understand how deadly that spray of air freshner* or the table washed in bleach** can be to someone who suffers with this type of problem.

What are we doing?

This is Ethan our grandson.  This picture was taken one night after he had a TERRIBLE reaction to the detergent that the babysitter had on her clothes.  His folks were away for a few hours and when they came home, they were told that he had been screaming for a while and she was unable to calm him down.  This was NOT normal for our little happy Ethan.  When Kara picked him up, she could instantly smell strong detergent on him. She immediately took his clothes off, gave him a bath, and he calmed right down.  He had a rash on his face and his little eyes were puffy, all because of the detergent on clothes! 

 



This Christmas we were made aware again of how powerful chemicals can be to little ones who suffer from chemical sensitivities.  This is Isaiah our grandson.  He was admitted into the hospital for respiratory issues.  He had a terrible cough, shortness of breathe, and his blood oxygen levels weren’t coming up.  He spent Christmas night and 2 more nights in the hospital….all because of a chemical reaction.  While the family was away for the holiday, someone else (who thought they were doing them a favor) cleaned their house in Clorox bleach, and little Isaiah couldn’t take it!  Again, all because of a cleaner!  Scary stuff!

Why does this have to happen to these innocent little ones?

And they are calling this marketing approach “Green”???!!!

Do You Hold Your Breath When You Clean?

I was reminded again how chemicals can make us sick!

As I left a local business today I walked through an entry way that was fogged with a window cleaner.  The gal was washing windows.  As I hurried out the door I commented "man does that stink". I tried to hold my breath as I got out of there as fast as I could.  With just those few seconds I could feel a difference in my head.

It reminded me of a presentation that I did last night on how changing brands can change your life.

I held up a card and read some ingredients that are in everyday cleaners. 
Here are four chemicals and some of the products they are in.
(If you watched "The Toxic Brew" from my last post some will look & sound familiar.)

BUTYL CELLOSVE: 
*  Linked to reproductive harm
*  Can cause irritation & tissue damage from inhalation
*  Exposure for 15 mins. while cleaning the shower, could inhale 3 X the acute exposure limit
*  Exposure through the skin

SOME PRODUCTS:
Windex, 409 & 409 Wipes, Simple Green-All Purpose Cleaner, Pledge- Electronics, Fantastik Antibacterial, Spot Shot Carpet Stain Remover, plus many more.

I ask you how can you spray a window cleaner on a window & not inhale it???
Think about all the people you know who are having trouble getting pregnant.  Could the chemicals in our cleaners play a part in that too?

This is a picture of a baby who was snuggled against someone who had used some of these chemicals in their laundry.  The baby cried for over an hour while the parents were gone.  The babysitter couldn't understand why he was crying.  When the parents got home he was broken out in a rash, his eyes were swollen & smelled like very strong laundry products.  They immediately gave him a bath & the baby started to settle down.  The baby's parents use only chemical free products in their home.

After looking at this picture doesn't it make sense to check out your laundry proucts.  Are they as safe as they could be?

The Toxic Brew of Chemicals in Household Cleaners

Cleaning house is not a little matter and can have far-reaching health effects. It’s all in what is used. Toxins in our homes – mainly the chemicals in our cleaning products – are being linked more and more often with many of the diseases that are rapidly taking control of our lives. Have you noticed the rise in numbers of children diagnosed with asthma and cancer?

Following is a video from the Canadian Broadcast show “MarketPlace” called “The Toxic Brew”. What they cover about the chemicals in household cleaners will really open your eyes (if you’re not informed already). WE need to become aware and responsible and cannot trust that because something is on TV or on the shelf at the local grocery store that it’s safe for our families. Children especially are at risk because their little systems (immune, reproductive) and brains are not fully developed. So many homes today are built tight – meaning that unless you open your windows, there is no (or very little) ventilation. You are trapped with the chemicals in your cleaners.

Wow! Do you really know what is in those chemicals you clean with?

I learned that my symptoms were caused by sensitivity to all kinds of chemicals that are found in everyday household products and the world around us.  I assumed that I was having some abnormal reaction to substances that were harmless to others.  I learned this wasn’t necessarily the case. 

So, go to your cupboard right now.  Pick a cleaner, any cleaner.  Does it contain sodium hydroxide, phenol, ammonia or formaldehyde?  These-and more-may be toxic.   Toxic as in dangerous, as in hurtful, as in not very clean at all.  Home is NO place for stuff like that!  So let's start by getting rid of those troublemakers.
